Birthstone of the Month
Opal brings Good Fortune
Throughout much of history, the opal was actually believed to bring good luck. The Romans believed that opals were a symbol of hope. During the Middle Ages, opals were believed to bestow all of the positive properties of colored gemstones due to the rainbow-like range of colors. Queen Victoria was also an avid collector of opals!

Why are Opals Considered Unlucky?
There's no denying the modern superstition regarding the "unlucky" opal. Here are two stories that are believed to be early origins of the superstition.
The first story comes from Sir Walter Scott's 1829 novel Anne of Geierstein. In the story, Lady Hermione wears an opal in her hair. It is after the opal is sprinkled with holy water that the opal loses its array of color and she dies shortly thereafter, reduced to a pile of ashes. After her death, she is accused of being a demon and the link between opals and "dark forces" is created.
The second story comes from late 19th century Spain where King Alfonzo XII experienced a spate of deaths in his family. It is said that his wife, grandmother, sister and sister-in-law all died within short periods of each other after receiving the same opal ring given by the king. The king himself suffered the same fate after wearing the ring.
