Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have returned!

We also have Cole’s Nature’s Garden Nectar, or you can easily make your own by mixing 1 part white granulated (cane/table) sugar to 4 parts hot water.
Don’t add any red dye, and never use honey or “natural” brown-colored sugars, which can make them very sick. Change nectar twice weekly in Spring, and every other day in the heat of the Summer for healthy hummers. Clean any black mold on feeders with diluted vinegar or plain bleach (not soap, which can leave a residue) and rinse well before refilling.

Remember that our feeders are never as busy in the Spring as they are in late Summer, so do not fret about low numbers. They will be buzzing again in late July, August and September when young birds come off nests and they all need to put on weight for migration. Spring and early Summer are times for breeding, nesting, guarding habitat and raising young, and they just visit feeders less often. So, relish the ones we do see now and happy hummer watching!
