This evening during our cozy snow storm Colin and I were sitting in front of the somewhat fading Christmas tree and creche and we enjoyed an evening of reminiscing.
We went down the list of the many many dear priests who since the early 1970's have walked through our door coming in out of the cold.
They were the first to be canceled.
They were the first who, because of their position at the head of the line of being persecuted for their standing with and for Tradition,
they were;
ostracized,
ridiculed,
and
dumped out in the cold unkind world.
The world where now only the "new" was worthy of attention.
Anything that had been held as sacred and treasured for centuries was now tabu!
And these poor men were stranded and had nowhere to go.

Many of these men found their way to our door. The stories they told were amazing.
But
as Colin and I recalled these stories we also remembered how sometimes the lay folks brought more harm to these men without even thinking
and
it is that that I decided to mention in this e-blast.

It certainly appears like we are heading into some of the same that we were dealing with in the
60's, 70's and 80's.
Who knows for sure,
but
there is one thing that I do think we need to pay attention to and that is using our heads.
The good priests who are willing to go rogue if and when their bishops stomp down upon them for being orthodox are going to have to be protected.
I'll never forget back in the 70's we had finally gotten permission to have a
Day of Recollection
and we even found a diocesan priest who was willing to lend us his parish church here in the Cities for the event.
We had obtained permission from the Bishop to hold this event, including the TLM and all.
People were ecstatic and they signed up from near and far.

Things were going very well and we were all excited for this big day which would allow us all to be able to attend the TLM in a regular parish church instead of a rented hotel room.
All was in readiness.
But sadly,
there were too many unwise or unthinking people who began calling the chancery office for details as to
time, and parking availability
and such.
The Bishop's office began noticing how many were from distant places and got annoyed.
It was then that my Father received the call from the chancery the night before the event saying that the permission to have the TLM said at this event
was now cancelled!
He was told that we could still have the
Day of Recollection
BUT
minus the TLM!
Yes, you can imagine how frustrating and disappointing this was not only for us after putting so much work into preparing for this, but for the almost a thousand who had signed up.
And all due to the stupidity and sloppiness
or overeagerness
or the lack of thinking
of some attendees.
This is what I'm suggesting we all begin thinking about as we head back into catacomb days.
We must become wise as serpents and gentle as doves.
In other words:
Use our heads!

I could tell many such stories from around the new conciliar world which we had to deal with back in those days.
It was all so new to so many.
They didn't know how to traverse this new road.
One thing I would suggest that everyone should do is to read some of the old books,
or
if you are not a reader, check out some great films.
Films which give us a clear idea of how others, in similar persecution times dealt with tyrants.
There are many.
But two come to mind:
Scarlet and the Black
(based on a true story)
and
Under the Roman Sky.
A safe point to remember is:
Don't ever bother the chancery offices with calls.
Instead-
Call your traditional priest
(that means only priests who actually say the TLM)
or
other lay folks who love the TLM and who you have confidence in if you have questions.
Be cautious!
This all might sound goofy to you,
but
when you've lived through times that called for caution once,
you never forget how important it all is.
We made the great progress that we have in regard to this ongoing Revolution we lived through (and are living through)
due to being aware of how to best deal with what we were up against.
And it has worked pretty well.

|
|
|
|
|
|
For the sake of our priests and our communities, don't be foolish.
We will have to walk the straight line as best we can and at times we will have to dodge the bullets that are sent our way.
But even until that day comes more openly,
use common sense now too.
