Game of the Month: Space Base

I think I originally looked at the cartoon graphics of Space Base and just dismissed it. Fortunately, a friend of mine convinced me to give it a closer look and I am sure glad I did. Space Base is a card drafting dice game along the lines of Machi Koro. I think it is a better game than Machi Koro though there is still the inherent luck factor of the dice. Fortunately, in Space Base the dice are not nearly as debilitating.
The tall, skinny cards are wildly colorful. The rulebook is good though there are a couple of errors. The online rulebook is correct. Turns are simple and quick. Roll the dice, use them separately or as a sum, take the rewards and then buy a card from the center if you wish. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
All players have the same hand of 12 ships which go onto the twelve spaces of their player boards. Each card has a blue space with a reward when that number is used. There is also a red reward panel at the very bottom that only comes into play when the ship is replaced by a new one. The old ship is turned upside down and “deployed” so that only the red reward is visible. All red rewards are usable on other player’s turns when those numbers come up on the dice. Some cards have abilities instead of rewards. Abilities work differently in that they need to be charged before use. When the number for an ability card is rolled you will put a cube on it. Abilities can be used at any time and they can be quite powerful. Not all cards will come up in any game so there is much replayability. The game ends when someone achieves 40 victory points.
I really enjoy Space Base. It has simple rules and the play is quick but still has lots of tactical challenges. If you are a fan of Machi Koro or you just like good dice games then check out this excellent offering from AEG.

Magic Minute

August is a big month for our commander players, We’ll be getting the release of Commander 2019 on August 23rd. That same weekend our store will be holding a Commander Event, the first of its kind. Core set 2020 Promos will be handed out to the winner and individual promos will be given to all players.
In addition, Standard events are being held in store on Tuesday and Friday Nights. If you are interested in getting into standard please let me know and I will help you in any way I can. Spoiler season seems like it may never end, beginning August 1-4 we’ll see the first Commander 2019 spoilers and I suspect later in the month we should see some Thrones Of Eldraine spoilers as well.
Remember to keep your eyes peeled for any new and exciting cards, and I hope to see you all at our Commander 2019 event.
