February's birthstone is the amethyst. Did you know amethyst is the name given to crystalline quartz in shades of purple? Crystals that are part amethyst and part citrine are called Ametrine. Amethysts are found all over the world; some of the most prized varieties come from Brazil, the United States, Russia and Sri Lanka. When choosing amethysts, it's important to know how factors such as color and cut affect an amethyst's price. - St. Valentine, the patron saint of romantic love, wore an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid.
- In gem localities such as Brazil, amethyst sometimes forms in hollow, crystal-lined geodes so large you can stand in them!

BUYER'S GUIDE: AMETHYSTS
WHAT TO LOOK FOR: COLOR AND CUT
When looking for amethysts, the first thing a person should look for is color. The best amethysts are strong reddish purple or purple, with no brownish or bronze-colored tints. There should be no noticeable color zoning when you look at the stone from the top. Too dark in (purple) tone and the amethyst might appear black in low lighting.
Another major factor when looking for amethysts is how they are cut. Like diamonds, the cut is very important. Most faceted amethysts lack visible inclusions however minor inclusions may be acceptable if the stone is richly colored and otherwise high quality. Remember that losing carat weight in the gem business costs stone cutters money. This means that sometimes a cutter will cut for weight and not brilliance.
